Fighters Agree To Compete In UFC Dream Match

The long-awaited fight set to finally happen this December

After years of rumor, speculation and failed negotiations, the bout hyped as a dream match could finally be coming to UFC's Octagon.

WrestlingObserver.com reported Wednesday that both Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva verbally agreed to fight at December's UFC 79 event.

Talk of the fight became very serious last year when UFC President Dana White brought Silva into the Octagon to hype a November 2006 fight against Liddell. Negotiations with PRIDE eventually broke down, putting an end to fans' hopes of seeing the battle of two of MMA's most feared fighters.

Soon after its purchase of PRIDE, UFC began eyeing September's UFC 76 event for a fight between Liddell and Silva. White, however, revealed in a summer interview that the fight would not happen (and would probably never happen) due to Silva backing out of an agreement to fight. Silva's story was that he merely asked for an extra two months to prepare.

Though White's words in the interview were pessimistic, a wave of optimism developed when UFC recently announced the acquisition of MMA's "Axe Murderer."

A December fight between the two, which was discussed publicly by UFC officials almost immediately after Silva's signing, was initially contingent on a Chuck Liddell victory at UFC 76. When Liddell failed to defeat Keith Jardine, the fight appeared off.

But, within days of the event's conclusion, talk of the Liddell vs. Silva fight re-emerged. And, if the Observer report is true, it will finally happen at UFC 79.

Matt Serra will defend his Welterweight Championship against Matt Hughes in the show's main-event matchup.
