Hughes-Serra Could Still Happen, Says Fighter

Matt Hughes claims the possibility of a grudge match with Matt Serra not dead

Though an immediate title match between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra cannot happen in the wake of Hughes' loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 79, the veteran fighter says fans awaiting the grudge match might still get their wish.

"I’ve already talked to Dana and Lorenzo, and we’ll probably see what happens with Georges and Serra. And if Serra loses, I might go against him," he wrote on his official blog.

While Hughes added that nothing is set in stone, the match seems inevitable following the repeated presentation of their mutual dislike on the recent "The Ultimate Fighter" season. Had Serra not been sidelined with a back injury, it would have happened at UFC 79.

Though Hughes has maintained his prediction that Georges St. Pierre will win his Welterweight Championship rematch against Matt Serra, which explains why he brought up the match possibility, he did not comment on whether he would get a title shot if Serra defeats GSP in their upcoming unification bout.

Hughes is repeatedly referred to as a future Hall of Famer and the best Welterweight of all time, but after two losses to GSP and a decision win over unranked Chris Lytle, it is not clear that Hughes should be considered a top contender for the Welterweight belt.
