American Idol: Early Favorite Leaves The Competition

Early frontrunner's "Idol" hopes are over

After seemingly regaining the momentum he developed early in the competition with two weeks of strong performances, Michael Johns' less than stellar rendition of "Dream On" brought his journey to an end.

The Australian-born performer opened this year's "Idol" journey on a high note with an acclaimed take on "Light My Fire" but gradually lost his frontrunner status to contestants David Archuleta and David Cook as his performances failed to click.

He came back into the limelight with strong takes on "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions" and "It's All Wrong, But it's All Right" but then left only a moderate mark for this week's "Dream On."

Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson joined Johns in the bottom three.

Only seven remain in the competition.
