American Idol: Road Ends For Another

Five remain after the latest "American Idol" elimination

Not even a rare word of praise from Simon Cowell was enough to keep Carly Smithson in the "American Idol" competition—she was eliminated Wednesday night.

Smithson was universally viewed as one of the most technically talented vocalists in the competition, but many of her performances failed to click with audiences and had resulted in past trips to the bottom group, even when analysts felt she outperformed many of her rivals.

Syesha Mercado, who has even more experience in the bottom two and three, had the second-fewest amount of votes this week. She performed "One Rock 'N Roll Too Many."

Both Carly and Syesha were praised for their performances; Brooke White and Jason Castro received far less flattering words from the judges but surprised many online analysts by staying out of danger this week. Favorites David Cook and David Archuleta also advanced, to the surprise of very few.

The top five will perform on a Neil Diamond-themed show next Tuesday.
