American Idol: The "American Idol 7" Finale is Set

Who will walk away with a recording contract and the "American Idol" crown?

In what might be viewed as the most anticipated "Idol" battle since season two's Ruben Studdard vs. Clay Aiken and the first true battle of the frontrunners since season four's Carrie Underwood vs. Bo Bice, David Cook and David Archuleta will square off on next week's "American Idol" finale.

Archuleta almost instantly escalated into the favorite chair with a well-received version of "Imagine," early in the season, while Cook excelled by delivering rock versions, using both original and existing arrangements, of classic songs like "Billie Jean" and "Hello." As the competition progressed, it became clear that the two were on a collision course.

Syesha Mercado escaped from the shadows of female frontrunners Carly Smithson and Brooke White to land in the top three despite a long history of near-eliminations. Her performance improvement unfortunately peaked last week, and her three performances Tuesday were not strong enough to let her play spoiler for another week. She was eliminated.

Whether it was Tamyra Gray, La Toya London, Chris Daughtry or Melinda Doolittle, so many presumed finale performers in Idol's past suffered from early eliminations. This year, however, it appears that the gap in popularity and talent between the favorites and the other contestants was too large for surprise to happen.

Now, in less than a week, Archuleta and Cook will make a final case to become this year's "American Idol."
