Film projected to set record for opening day 'chick flick' gross

Box Office Mojo and Variety report that the "Sex and the City" movie adaptation grossed more than $26 million in its opening day Friday, which marks the highest opening day ever for a romantic comedy.

Strong Friday openings are not the norm for romantic comedies (also known as "chick flicks")—with the obvious exception of family-targeted blockbusters, monster Friday figures are usually reserved for male-oriented films.

In fact, monster weekend openings on the whole are almost never true for films targeting the female demographic, in which success is often a product of longevity.

By comparison, "The Devil Wears Prada," which targeted a similar sect of the female population, earned only $9.4 million in its first night. It was considered a huge hit for its demographic.

Most analysts presumed "Sex" did not have a chance of touching the second weekend take for "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull." It now appears to have a very good shot of finishing the weekend in first.
