The TV adaptation proves doubters wrong

Few analysts gave "Sex and the City" a shot at winning the weekend box office. They were first silenced when the film grossed more than $26 million on Friday, a figure which is unheard of for a 'chick flick' that targets older women. The silencing continues with the weekend box office estimates; they show "Sex and the City" dominating "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

"Sex and the City" grossed an estimated $55.7 million this weekend, which gave it a safe margin over the $46 million for "Indiana." New film "The Strangers" was a distant third with $20.7 million.

"Iron Man" followed with $14 million and now has a cumulative gross of over $275 million. "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" was fifth with $13 million.

With a trailer that has become an Internet phenomenon, "The Foot Fist Way" grossed $36,000 this weekend in its four-theatre debut.
