Variety reports that Aziz Ansari of MTV's "Human Giant" has been cast in NBC's upcoming spin-off to "The Office."

The casting comes as part of a one-year holding deal Ansari signed with Universal Media Studios.

"We met him pretty early on and thought he was very funny," "Office" executive producer Greg Daniels said. "We loved his work in 'Human Giant,' which I'm a huge fan of, as is Mike, and we have a good character for him."

Michael Schur, also an executive producer for the spin-off, told Variety that a concept for the show has not yet been finalized. It does, however, appear that the show's connection to the main "Office" series will be limited.

Talk of moving a character from the main show to the spin-off appears to be dying down, and the more likely scenario at present involves launching the new show via a backdoor introduction on a season five episode of "The Office."

The spin-off, with a writing team that includes alumni from "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and "South park," will air after "The Office" beginning at midseason.
