Weekend Box Office: "Hancock" Conquers Holiday Weekend

Another July Fourth belongs to Will Smith

Will Smith, the leading man for some of the biggest Independence Day weekend hits, helped lead another film to box office dominance.

"Hancock," his latest, posted $66 million for the weekend and has accumulated $107.3 million since opening Wednesday. Though the number was below projections on box office analysis websites, which went as high as $150 million, it was more than enough to give Will Smith another box office victory.

"Wall-E," last week's winner, added another $33.4 million to its take this weekend. Though the film continues to be a strong performer, its retention—only fifty three percent of last weekend's take—is somewhat disappointing for a film that has received such glowing reviews. "Wanted" followed at third with $20.6 million.

No other major new releases bowed this week, although "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" expanded to 1843 screens and posted only $3.6 million. It landed in eighth place.

Weekend Top Ten:
1) Hancock - $66 million ($107.3 million)
