“Social Network” Wins Weekend Box Office, “My Soul to Take” Bombs

While the results could be altered once the weekend finals are revealed, as of Sunday evening, “The Social Network” appears to have won a second consecutive weekend box office race.

The critically-acclaimed film added a solid $15.5 million to its cumulative gross, topping the $14.6 million bow for newcomer “Life as We Know It.” While the latter total is slightly below that of Heigl’s summer film “Killers” and would represent her worst toplined “chick flick” opening if the figure holds, it represents a step up from such recent romantic comedy entries as “You Again.”

Fellow new release “The Secretariat” underwhelmed with $12.6 million, but it had no trouble claiming third place. Fourth went to “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” ($7 million), while fifth belonged to bomb “My Soul to Take.” Despite higher 3D ticket costs, “Soul” could only manage $6.9 million.

On the limited front, “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” opened to a tame $2 million on 742 screens.

Weekend Top Ten:
1) The Social Network – $15.5M ($46.1M)
2) Life as We Know It – $14.6M
3) The Secretariat – $12.6M
4) Legend of the Guardians – $7M ($39.4M)
5) My Soul to Take – $6.9M
6) The Town – $6.4M ($73.8M)
7) Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps – $4.6M ($43.7M)
8) Easy A – $4.2M ($48.1M)
9) Case 39 – $2.6M ($9.6M)
10) You Again – $2.5M ($20.7M)
