Demi Lovato’s “Unbroken” Album Sales Fall Short of Buzz, Tony Bennett Leads

The good news? “Unbroken,” Demi Lovato’s third album and her ‘comeback’ following a storm of negative media attention and a stint in rehab, will likely sell more in its opening week than the most recent albums from fellow Disney Divas Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.

The bad news? Despite receiving ample buzz and the benefit of a buzzworthy single in “Skyscraper,” the album will not significantly outperform predecessor “Here We Go Again.”

Based on opening day sales figures, Hits Daily Double forecasts “Unbroken” will sell 110-120,000 copies by week’s end. “Here We Go Again” kicked things off with an opening sales tally of 108,000 copies.

Gomez’s slow album-to-album sales growth and Cyrus’ album-to-album decline should have tapered expectations–clearly, Disney’s most recent crop of stars is not yet ready to dominate the world of album sales. But with a single that exploded in its initial iTunes release and buzz that this was a serious, mature album–not a novelty to strike while the Disney iron was hot–a more-than-marginal increase from the predecessor had to be expected.

With Lovato’s sales in lukewarm territory, Tony Bennett’s “Duets II” will lead newcomers on expected sales of 150-170,000. Lady Antebellum’s holdover “Own the Night” should land in the same territory.

Also debuting: Needtobreathe’s “The Reckoning” (Hits forecast of 40-50,000), Mindless Behavior’s “#1 Girl” (35-40,000), Gavin DeGraw’s “Sweeter” (35,000) and Pearl Jam’s “Twenty” (27-30,000).

  1. “Based on opening day sales figures, Hits Daily Double forecasts “Unbroken” will sell 110-120,000 copies by week’s end. “Here We Go Again” kicked things off with an opening sales tally of 108,000 copies.”

In other words it WILL outperform Here We Go Again then right? So how will it NOT out perform her predecessor if her numbers were 108 for that album, and her new numbers will be 110 to 120? Thats OUTPERFORMING them. Hardly “luke warm” my friend.

    • The word used is “significantly” outperform. Even if this album beats expectations and does, say, 135K copies, that would not be significantly outperforming the 108K for Here We Go Again, especially since this album had so much more hype.

  2. Demo’s album will debut at the top spot… It’ll sell more than her previous efforts due to more mainstream content on “Unbroken”.
She has loyal fans, who will probably buy multiple CD’s to show that their true ‘Lovatics’! That’s how Jonas Brothers’s third album, A Little Bit Longer, went on to sell 525,000 units in it’s first week.

“Unbroken” is a really good album, her best yet. I cannot wait to see how the album sells, how well the singles do, and if she’ll be headlining her own tour here soon.

  3. This prediction is BULL SHIT… Sorry for the language but if HWR does their jobs right by promoting Demi the way they should like the promote Miley and Selena And the Jonas brothers she will also have Best selling albums.. THIS album however is AMAZING I doubt this album will flop… Her album was #1 on iTunes in LESS than 30mins….Unbroken was sold out in store… Think about that….If they can just promote Demi’s Album I am positive that Demi’s Album will go Gold!! DONT UNDERESTIMATE LOVATICS cheers

  4. I really hope that the predictions are wrong. I mean, this is great in the Disney/Hollywood Records world, but it’s NOTHING for a true artist like Demi with such an amazing album and voice.
Plus, I hope it to sell a lot more than Here We Go Again, that album barely had promo and still had a great 1st week. Even though Demi doesn’t have the same amount of promotion as Joe Jonas, Jonas Brothers and Selena Gomez, I believe that many people started looking at her as a true artist with her recent (amazing) live performances, and are giving her a chance, hopefully buying the album.
Btw, hope her record label starts putting her album in stores, because it is sold out in many of them, which I think it’s because they didn’t sent too many copies to them. 🙁

  5. If Needtobreathe outsold Tony Bennett’s new album yesterday, which they did, why is Bennett called the leader and predicted to sell more this week? By the way, Demi outsold both so, shouldn’t she be considered the opening week front-runner? And, by the way, I’m neutral on Demi, so this isn’t a fan statement…

    • Outsold on what metric?

Perhaps the younger-skewing artists did on iTunes, but Bennett would have made a far bigger splash at retail stores (physical CDs). For someone like Demi Lovato, her iTunes sales are going to represent a far bigger percentage of the total.
